UK SuperStock took over Mercedes Benz World, Sussex on Saturday night as the 2017 season and all that played their part was celebrated at the P1 UK Annual Awards Dinner. More than 100 racers, supporters, sponsors, venue partners and suppliers were in attendance to see the 2017 P1 SuperStock champions crowned after a competitive year of racing.
An enthralling season saw many thrills, spills and incredible overall action as our UK racers tackled the conditions of Denmark, Scotland and Wales to climb as high up the table as possible.
Coming out on top for the second successive year were Sam and Daisy Coleman in the Pertemps Panther. Second place finishes in Aalborg and Milford Haven alongside a weekend win in Greenock.
Following the Coleman’s in the standings were the Milford Waterfront pair of Andrew Foster and Charles Morris. The pair made their way up the standings throughout the year finishing fourth in Aalborg and second in Greenock before a resounding Welsh Grand Prix of the Sea victory in Milford Haven.
Also, claiming a podium spot are the Experience Kissimmee team of Neil and Jason Jackson. They claimed third in the opening round, two top-three finishes in Scotland and, despite battling technical issues, secured third in the standings after the outing in Wales.
We had two other awards handed out on Saturday night as the Rookie of the Year and Team of the Year was announced.
There are years of experience throughout the SuperStock rankings which makes it even more impressive when a team are able to make a significant impact in their debut season. Having secured a Super-Final place in Aalborg, Dave and Ashleigh Finlayson in the Spirit of Inverclyde Panther managed an impressive fourth in Scotland before another great outing in Milford Haven to win Rookie of the Year honours.
The highly contested Team of the Year went to Milford Waterfront. Entering only their second year in SuperStock, they showed impressive improvement to make an incredible impact on the UK SuperStock series and battle their way into the title race.
Robert Wicks, Powerboat P1 Chief Operating Officer, reviewed this year's competition by saying; "The 2017 P1 SuperStock season saw the teams make the long journey to Denmark for the championship’s first event on European waters. Racing in front of a crowd of more than 70,000 people at the Aalborg Regatta was a real treat for the teams.
"This was followed by our second consecutive visit to Scotland where another significant crowd turned out to see some tremendous race action on the Clyde, building on our first visit to Scotland in 2016. The bumper crowds certainly demonstrated powerboat racing’s appeal and ability to attract a significant audience. Although plans to race in Scarborough did not materialise, we wrapped up the season on a high at Milford Haven in Wales, a new venue on the P1 calendar.
"New television broadcast agreements, significant growth in social media, innovative marketing and promotional activity and exciting racing that went down to the final race of the final event made for a memorable season. My thanks, as always, go to the race teams for putting on a spectacular show, P1’s operations, marketing and technical team, our long-standing sponsors and partners, the UIM and RYA and particularly our race management team of officials and volunteers who give up their valuable weekends to support the race events."
