The 'Grand Prix of the Gulf' returns to St. Pete/Clearwater

P1 AquaX racing returns to St. Pete/Clearwater after a successful campaign last year

Packed with power, performance and plenty of thrills and spills, anticipation is building for the return of the P1 AquaX and the P1 SuperStock USA Championships to St. Pete/Clearwater on the weekend of June 16-17, from 10am to 3pm.

Bringing together some of the biggest names in these high-performance sports, this isn't the first time that St. Pete/Clearwater has provided the backdrop for the championships, having successfully hosted the event in 2017. Held once again in front of the Postcard Inn on St. Pete Beach, this year the event is in partnership with the host destination, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.

"It's great when we can combine our greatest attraction, white sand beaches, with events to give visitors a unique experience in a world-class destination," said Tim Ramsberger, Chief Operating Officer for Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.

Visit St. Pete/Clearwater is sponsoring a P1 SuperStock race boat, piloted this year, by veteran racer, Lee Baker, who has been racing with the series since 2013. Lee will be accompanied by navigator, Jamie Canter. New for 2018, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater will also sponsor an official P1 AquaX racing team consisting of two top competitors, Christian Daly and Jason Lester. The teams got off to a great start in the season opener last weekend in Miami with Lester taking second place in the P1 AquaX Sprint Spark/EX class, the Visit St. Pete Clearwater boat coming 6th and Daly riding well in his debut race as part of the P1 AquaX Pro series.

P1 AquaX and P1 SuperStock championships make for fantastic spectator events, with plenty of on-the-water action as riders and drivers navigate the challenging, close to shore courses and each other. Over 30 PWC (personal watercraft) riders compete in any one race of the P1 AquaX series and all eight of the P1 SuperStock race boats hit the same start line in the one-design powerboat racing championship.

CEO of Powerboat P1, the global rights holder for the events, Azam Rangoonwala, said of P1's return to St. Pete Beach.

"It is always a pleasure to host our events at St. Pete Beach, the year-round sunshine and pristine sandy beaches, provide an ideal setting for competitors and spectators alike. And this year, thanks to our partnership with Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, our P1 AquaX and the P1 SuperStock USA Championship events are on course to be the most exhilarating yet."

This double bill of top class marine motorsport action will be enjoyed by television viewers in more than 150 countries and through social media channels.
