It will, in fact, be a two-pronged record attempt as Nigel looks to break not only the one-way journey record time between Key West and Havana but also the two-way speed record on the return to the USA.
This USA-Cuba Lucas Oil speed record attempt is a tremendous challenge for SilverHook given the expected wave conditions and with the boat reaching speeds in excess of 125mph.
The Lucas Oil-sponsored powerboat measures an impressive 48 feet, weighs over 13,000 pounds and is powered by two Mercury Racing engines producing a combined 3,100 horsepower with a top speed of nearly 168 miles per hour in calm conditions.
Nigel raced in the P1 World Championship eight years ago as part of the Lucas Oil team and most recently competed in the Sarasota Grand Prix Powerboat Festival on the 4th of July weekend, using the weekend as a shakedown ahead of the record attempt.
In order to break the record Nigel will need to complete his attempt in under six hours with the official record having been set by American inventor, entrepreneur, motor boat builder/racer and motor racing Hall of Fame member, Gar Wood back in 1922.
An unsanctioned world record of 1 hour and 51 minutes was set by the ocean racer Apache in 2015.
P1 USA Managing Director Azam Rangoonwala said he is thrilled to be associated with the speed record attempt and pleased that P1 has played a role in Nigel’s successful powerboat racing career.
“Nigel raced with Powerboat P1 just eight years ago and we are now delighted to be sanctioning this world speed record attempt as one of the country's leading powerboating promoters," said Azam.
“I know that the USA-Cuba record has been in Nigel’s mind since he first raced in Key West, and as a highly professional and hugely respected veteran racer, he is a true inspiration.”
“Like Nigel, you can make Powerboat P1 a key part of your racing career by competing in one of our mono-hull SuperStock boats right here in Florida. It’s a great way to start – affordable, exciting and fun – and you could become a national champion. Just call or email me on +1-407-985-1938 or email@example.com.”
