Frank & Al’s Pizza claim US title despite Spectre's late pressure

It was an enthralling and nervous end to the US Championships as Frank & Al’s Pizza fended of Spectre’s dramatic fightback in Islamorada.

Heading into the weekend’s racing Frank & Al’s Pizza were top of the standings while Spectre were 20 points behind in fourth, but four wins from five races vaulted the latter up the standings and within touching distance of the Championship win.

The gap immediately got smaller as the opening race of the finale was a repeat of Sarasota with Spectre continued their winning form.

After clinching all three wins last time out they once again crossed the line first ahead of Southeastern Lighting Solutions.

A four-way battle for third was won by current Championship leaders Frank & Al’s Pizza as they beat out Visit St Petersburg/Clearwater, GEICO and Sarasota Ford.

Race 2 seems to be a favourite of Visit St. Peterburg/Clearwater as they won the second race of the weekend for the second successive round – they also won Race 2 in Jacksonville.

Spectre’s winning streak may have come to an end on four consecutive races as they were next over the line before Frank & Al’s Pizza secured another third-place finish.

Visit Jacksonville were in fourth, Southeastern Lighting Solutions in fifth and GEICO secured sixth while seventh-placed Sarasota Ford suffered mechanical failure which ended their chances of contending for the race win.

Spectre added to their earlier win with another victory in Saturday's final race to close the gap on top spot.

It was the same one-two as the weekend opener with Southeastern Lighting Solutions taking third while GEICO fought their way in to third.

Sarasota Ford's issues last time out stopped them from taking to the start line, Frank & Al's Pizza moved down one spot from third in Race 2 to fourth this time around and they were followed by Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater in fifth and sixth-placed Visit Jacksonville.

We were no clearer to who will be crowned the 2017 US Champion after Saturday's racing with 11 points separating the leaders Frank & Al’s Pizza, second-placed Spectre and third-placed Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater.

Sunday started as Saturday ended with Spectre back on top as the battle for second was won by Frank Frank & Al’s Pizza followed by third-placed Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater and GEICO in fourth.

Visit Jacksonville was next over the line in fifth while Southeastern Lighting Solutions completed the points scoring as Sarasota Ford were not able to make it back on the water for either of Sunday’s races.

With one race to go and only five points separating the top two it was all to play for heading into the final race of the 2017 campaign.

A fourth success of the weekend was sealed by Spectre while Frank & Al’s Pizza crossed the line in third leaving the two teams level on 299 and it was Frank & Al’s Pizza that remainder aloft the table courtesy of having completed more miles throughout the series.

Southeastern Lighting Solutions ended their season with a second in the final race while GEICO clinched fourth and Visit Jacksonville took fifth.

Despite coming sixth in the final race of season, Visit St. Petersburg completed the overall podium as their finish in Race 5 secured third in the Championship standings, eight points above fourth-placed Southeastern Lighting Solutions.

GEICO and Visit Jacksonville finished fifth and sixth overall respectively followed by Team Barbados in seventh, eighth-placed FJ Propellers and Sarasota Ford who missed the opening round of the series.

A campaign’s worth of racing came down to the exciting final few seconds yet it was the consistency of Frank & Al’s Pizza that eventually helped them climb to the top and be crowned 2017 P1 US Champions.
